Born in Taiwan, Hui-ssu moved to Japan at age 15. He studied graphic design at Waseda University before moving to New York, where he worked as an assistant on the cover art for scores of albums by David Bowie and Talking Heads. His illustrations have also appeared on album covers for Steely Dan, Miles Davis, The Clash, No Doubt, and PJ Harvey.
